Skip Hire and Clearance in County Dublin: A Practical Guide
If you are in County Dublin and have something to get rid of, the hard part is usually working out which service fits. A skip is not always the answer, and a van is not always enough. This guide is for homeowners, landlords, executors and tenants across the county who need skip hire, junk removal, house clearance or a man with a van.
We cover what each service is for, when a skip permit is needed, what affects the price, which towns we cover and how to get a price. SkipNow.ie offers all of them, so the aim here is to point you at the right one rather than the most expensive one.
Which service suits your job
Start with what you are dealing with and who is going to do the lifting.
Skip hire suits jobs where waste builds up over days: a renovation, a garden clear-out, a loft emptied bit by bit. You fill it yourself at your own pace. Delivery, collection and disposal are included, and the standard hire period is 4 days. Standard delivery takes 1-4 working days, so book ahead if you have a deadline.
Junk removal is for when you would rather not lift anything. Licensed, fully insured waste carriers load straight into the van, so there is no skip and no council permit. It works well for an old sofa, a pile from the garage or a mixed load. Most jobs are collected within 1-3 working days of you accepting the quote.
House clearance covers a whole property. It is priced as one fixed job from photos of each room, garage, shed and attic. Contents are sorted on site, good items go to charity where possible, and sentimental items can be set aside. It covers probate, end-of-tenancy and downsizing clearances. Most single-occupancy homes are cleared in one working day, and larger homes take 1-2 days.
A man with a van is for moving things, not throwing them out. Think furniture pickups, a single item from a shop or a small flat move. Blankets and straps are used on every job, a two-man crew is available for heavy items, and charity drop-offs can be arranged on request.
A rough rule: if it is waste you will sort yourself over a few days, hire a skip. If it is waste someone else should lift, book junk removal. If it is a whole property, book a house clearance. If it is going to a new home, call the van.
Skip permits in County Dublin
A skip on a private driveway needs no permit. A skip on a public road or footpath does, and you apply for it yourself. In County Dublin that means applying directly to your Dublin local authority, which is Dublin City, Fingal, South Dublin or Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, depending on where you live. Dublin City Council's site is dublincity.ie, and Fingal, South Dublin and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown each have their own.
Check the council's own page for current fees and timing before you fix a delivery date, since those come from the council and not from us.
Junk removal, house clearance and man with a van jobs need no permit. The crew loads straight into the van, so nothing sits on the road or footpath. If you have no driveway, that makes them the simpler route.
What affects the price
Skip prices depend on the skip size and the exact address. There is no single county-wide price, so you enter your Eircode on the price page to see the sizes and prices for your address. Delivery, collection and disposal are included.
Junk removal is a fixed price based on your photos, agreed before collection. Guide prices are: single item from €49, quarter van load from €200, half load from €350 and full load from €650. Labour and disposal are included. Material is sorted at a licensed transfer station and around 70% is recycled. A certificate of disposal is available on request.
House clearance is quoted as one fixed price for the whole property, worked out from your photos. Items of value can be offset against the cost, so make sure good furniture shows up in the pictures. Certificates of disposal are available for landlords and executors.
Man with a van is a fixed price from a photo or list plus the pickup and drop-off addresses. Single items start from €40, furniture pickups from €60 and small flat moves from €180. Bigger or longer moves are quoted.

How to get a price or book
For a skip, enter your Eircode on the price page, pick a size and book. If the skip is going on a public road or footpath, apply to your Dublin local authority for the permit yourself.
For junk removal, send photos of what needs to go. For a house clearance, send photos of each room, garage, shed and attic. You get a fixed price before anything is collected, and you only accept it if you are happy.
For a man with a van, send a photo or a list along with the pickup and drop-off addresses. Same-day service is sometimes possible Tuesday to Thursday for junk removal and van jobs, so say so when you send your details if you are in a hurry.
